The X bodies proving that gender is a social construct

The X bodies is a project that invites people to question how gender is defined. Right now, the project is in the stage of applying for funding. To prepare for this, I am collecting photos to create a visual sketch of the final work.

Through your submissions, the project will show that gender is a social construct. Society is largely organized around the division between “female” and “male”, yet this project will highlight how absurd it is to define a person entirely by the genitals they happen to be born with. How this will be revealed in the final work is still a secret.

By submitting a photo, you agree that it may be included in the funding application. On the submission form, you can indicate whether your photo may also be included in the final project and whether it can be used online or only in the final installation.

How to submit your photo
All bodies are welcome: trans, non-binary, agender, intersex, cis, of any background, any size, and anyone aged 18 or older.

1. Frame yourself from under the chin to mid-thigh, like in the example below
2. Make sure your photo is well lit with natural dayligh
3. Use a plain white background

  • You can take the photo with your phone or any camera
  • The photo should be sharp and clear, not blurry
  • Color or black and white is fine, although the final project will be presented in black and white

Your contribution will help make visible that gender is not fixed, but something we collectively shape.

Thank you!

(For those who don’t know me: I am an agender queer photographer and artist. I handle your material with integrity and respect, and I use it to contribute to a more inclusive world.)
